There’s something about biting into a crisp, juicy apple on a cool fall day that just feels like Washington.
From the orchards of Eastern Washington to the apple trees right here at Swans Trail Farms, apples have become a pretty important part of what makes our state special. In fact, Washington is the leading apple-producing state in the country, producing billions of pounds of apples every year. So, what makes Washington such a great place to grow them?
It’s All About the Weather
Believe it or not, one of Washington’s biggest advantages for growing apples is the combination of warm days and cool nights.
Much of Washington’s apple-growing region sits east of the Cascade Mountains, where the mountains create a rain shadow. That means the eastern part of the state gets significantly less rainfall than Western Washington and has a drier growing season.
During the day, plenty of sunshine helps apple trees produce energy and develop sweet, flavorful fruit. Then, when temperatures drop at night, the apples have a chance to develop their flavor and color. Cool nights are especially important for many of the red apple varieties we know and love.
Basically, Washington gives apples a little bit of everything they need: sunshine, warm days, cool nights, and a dry growing season.
Plenty of Sunshine + Water Where It Counts
Washington may be known for its rainy reputation, but the state's major apple-growing regions are actually fairly dry. That might sound surprising!
The Cascade Mountains create a natural rain shadow, leaving much of Eastern Washington with a semi-arid climate. Farmers are then able to carefully irrigate their orchards using water from rivers, reservoirs, and mountain snowpack.
This combination gives growers a lot of control over the water their trees receive while still providing the sunshine and dry conditions apples love.
Washington Grows A LOT of Apples
Washington isn't just good at growing apples—we grow a lot of them.
According to the USDA, Washington produced approximately 7.4 billion pounds of apples in 2026.
Washington also grows dozens of apple varieties, from familiar favorites like Gala and Honeycrisp to newer varieties that have been developed right here in the Pacific Northwest.
And while much of Washington's commercial apple production happens in Eastern Washington, apples are grown throughout the state—including right here at Swans Trail Farms!
