Why Fall Starts on the Farm Long Before Harvest Festival
When you think of fall at Swans Trail Farms, you might picture pumpkins in the patch, apples hanging from the trees, a giant corn maze, and families enjoying a crisp fall day on the farm.
But long before the first visitor walks through the gates, fall has already been underway for months.
While summer is still in full swing, our farmers and team are already preparing for the busiest season of the year. Crops are growing, fields are being maintained, apples are getting closer to harvest, and the farm is slowly transforming into the fall destination our visitors know and love.
Here's a behind-the-scenes look at what happens before Harvest Festival begins.
The Apples Are Getting Ready
One of the first signs that fall is approaching is right there in the orchard.
Throughout the summer, our apple trees are busy growing and developing their fruit. As the season progresses, we're watching the apples closely and keeping an eye on their size, color, and ripeness.
Different apple varieties mature at different times, which means there's a lot to keep track of in the orchard.
By the time visitors arrive for apple picking, months of growing and farm work have already gone into those apples.
The Pumpkin Patch Has Been Growing All Summer
It's easy to look at a pumpkin patch in October and think, “Wow, look at all those pumpkins!”
But those pumpkins have been growing for months.
The pumpkin plants start as tiny seeds and gradually develop into sprawling vines that cover the fields. Throughout the summer, farmers are watching the crops, managing the fields, and keeping an eye on the weather.
As fall approaches, those green fields begin transforming into the colorful pumpkin patch visitors come to explore.
And that's when we know we're getting close!
The Corn Maze Takes Shape
Our corn maze is another project that starts long before Harvest Festival.
The corn needs an entire growing season to reach the height needed to create the maze. While the corn is growing, the maze design is being planned and prepared.
Then, once the corn is ready, the pathways are cut to create the maze visitors will navigate in the fall.
And if you've ever wondered why there are so many signs throughout the maze, there's a reason for that too. More than 700 signs and facts are placed throughout the maze, making it more than just a place to get lost. It's a place to learn!
The Fields Need Attention Too
A farm doesn't take the summer off just because fall is coming.
Fields need to be maintained, crops need attention, equipment needs to be checked, and countless little jobs have to be taken care of before visitors arrive. There's always something happening behind the scenes.
And because we're a working farm, sometimes the work doesn't go exactly according to plan. Farmers have to work around weather, growing conditions, equipment, and whatever else the season decides to throw at them!
Getting the Farm Ready for Visitors
Then there's everything that visitors might not think about. Attractions need to be prepared. Paths need to be ready. Buildings and gathering spaces need attention. Signs need to go up. The farm needs to be cleaned and organized.
And all of those little details add up. By the time opening day arrives, a tremendous amount of work has already happened behind the scenes.
And Then There's Great Harvest Glow...
This year, there's even more happening on the farm as we prepare for Great Harvest Glow.
After the sun goes down, the farm transforms again with glowing scenes where guests can wander through glowing pumpkin displays, dazzling lighted pathways, and immersive moments designed to spark wonder around every corner.
Creating something like that takes plenty of preparation. So, while visitors are enjoying the finished experience at night, there's a whole team of people who have been working behind the scenes to make it happen.
Fall Is a Season, Not Just a Weekend
By the time Harvest Festival opens, the farm may look like it magically transformed overnight. But the truth is, fall starts on the farm long before fall starts for everyone else.
It starts with seeds in the ground, tiny apples on the trees, and pumpkin vines spreading across the fields and corn growing taller every day.
It starts with farmers watching the crops, maintaining the fields, preparing equipment, building attractions, and getting everything ready for the season ahead.
