Behind the Scenes: How we Grow our Pumpkins

When you visit Swans Trail Farms in the fall, it's easy to admire rows upon rows of bright orange pumpkins stretching across the fields. But long before families arrive to pick the perfect pumpkin, months of planning, planting, and hard work have already taken place.

Growing thousands of healthy pumpkins doesn't happen overnight. From tiny seeds planted in late spring to the vibrant pumpkin patch you'll explore each fall, every pumpkin has a story.

It All Starts with a Tiny Seed

Pumpkin season actually begins months before autumn arrives.

As spring temperatures warm and the soil is ready, our farming crew begins planting pumpkin seeds throughout our fields. Each seed is carefully placed with enough room for vines to spread, leaves to grow, and pumpkins to develop throughout the summer.

Different pumpkin varieties mature at different rates, so timing is everything. Careful planning helps ensure that our pumpkin patch is full of pumpkins just in time for Harvest Festival.

Growing Healthy Vines Takes Time

Once the seeds sprout, the real work begins.

Throughout the summer, our team spends countless hours caring for the fields. That includes:

  • Monitoring soil moisture
  • Irrigating when needed
  • Managing weeds
  • Watching for pests and diseases
  • Helping each plant stay healthy as it grows

Pumpkin vines can stretch several feet in every direction, creating a blanket of green leaves across the field. Beneath those leaves, tiny pumpkins slowly begin to appear.

Bees Are Some of Our Hardest Workers

One of the most important jobs on the farm belongs to an animal you may not even notice.

Bees play a critical role in growing pumpkins.

Each bright yellow pumpkin flower must be pollinated before it can develop into a pumpkin. As bees travel from flower to flower collecting nectar and pollen, they help fertilize the blossoms that eventually grow into the pumpkins you'll see in the patch.

Without pollinators, there would be far fewer pumpkins each fall.

That's one reason we work hard to create a healthy environment for bees and other beneficial insects throughout the growing season.

Watching the Pumpkins Grow

One of the most exciting parts of summer is watching the pumpkins change week by week.

What starts as a tiny green pumpkin slowly grows larger throughout the season. As temperatures cool and daylight changes, those green pumpkins begin transforming into the familiar shades of bright orange that signal fall is almost here.

Not every pumpkin looks exactly alike—and that's part of what makes pumpkin patches so fun.

Some pumpkins are tall and narrow, while others are short and round. Some are perfect for carving spooky jack-o'-lanterns, while others are just the right size for decorating your front porch.

Nature makes each one unique.

Harvest Takes Teamwork

As Harvest Festival approaches, there's still plenty to do.

Our crew walks the fields, checking pumpkin quality and making sure the patch is ready for visitors. Paths are prepared, displays are arranged, and thousands of pumpkins are placed where families can easily explore and choose their favorites.

Behind every pumpkin in the patch are months of teamwork from our farmers and seasonal staff who help prepare the farm for one of the busiest times of the year.
